quote by McIntosh in "White Privilege Knapsack"

"Disapproving of the system won't be enough to change them. I was taught to think that racism could end if white individuals changed their attitude. But a "white" skin in the United States opens many doors for whites whether or not we approve of the way dominance has been conferred on us."
quote by McIntosh in "White Privilege Knapsack"

This quote made me think of things that I do every day with no problems because of how I was born into the world in the U.S.A. Some might call me lucky or privileged. It is hard for me to really feel because I have not had to live in their shoes. I was with friends one time at the mall and we were shopping for the holidays. I went to one side of the store and my friend went to the other. When I looked up I saw that a sale associate was near her folding clothes and I didn't think anything of it. About 5 minutes later I looked up again and my friend is in a new place in the store but the sale's person is still near her.  So I watched for a minute and I saw the sale's person fallowing her. So I went over and asked my friend if she was o.k. She said yes and I told her it was time to go because I didn't feel we were welcome in the store. When we left, I told her what I saw and she said it happened all the time. I was blow away that someone could think that my friend was stealing because of her skin was not white. The sale's person had closed the door for her to shop in piece without being fallowed. That was the day that I saw how hard it was for her sometimes to shop without being looked down on. I made me think about how Johnson tried to put himself in others shoes to see how hard people's lives could be. I saw how hard it was for my friend to just shop without being thought of as a criminal. Johnson has you stop and think about how you can be born and right at that point you are born into a higher or lower ability of rights.

What doors were opened or closed for you?

Was is opened or closed because of your Able-Bodeness?

Was it opened or closed because of Whiteness?

We voted them all into office so what kind of leaders do we like?

I red the article "White Privilege Knapsack", which made me think if all the ideas we talked about SCWAAMP.  It makes me think about how we think about how we might want to stop discrimination again things but we have so many different ideas we except to be ok.  We don't think twice about making a crayon color called "flesh" or how we have not had a woman president in the U.S.A.
